A 60 second guide to Rome
Rome: Beautiful people, history, architecture, culture,
art, mopeds, fashion, olive oil, pizza and lashings of fresh ice
cream. It has all this and more. So why is the city fascinated with
Irish pubs? I went to Rome to investigate... but ended up getting
drunk and forgetting my mission. So here's what I remember
about the Eternal City.
The best thing about the bars in Rome (even the Irish ones) is
that they rarely measure out spirits. So a double could end-up being
a quarter of a bottle. If the barperson is distracted whilst pouring,
the result could be even more intoxicating. Everyone in Rome is
so laidback; you can't help but loosen your spine and absorb
the relaxed and unhurried atmosphere.
A great place to enjoy the sun on your back
whilst eating al fresco is Enzo' s. Nestled in a back street
of Trastevere, Enzo's is a no frills restaurant that serves
the best Italian food at a very reasonable price.
It's perfect for GlamPoppers who want to sample authentic Italian
cuisine. The house wine is fantastic and a bottle of red is the
perfect accompaniment to Enzo's homemade Bolognese.
A starter, pasta, half bottle of house wine and an espresso to
finish is about €10 - the price of a couple of pints in
London.
Move on to a livelier environment and head to Campo dei Fiori.
The Drunken Ship there offers American student-like shenanigans
and great offers on drinks. Mondays is especially good for girls,
who get free shots when they flash the barman. For a bigger measure,
make sure he begins pouring before you flash. It's all about
'distraction' in this city!
Happy Hour is everyday between 5pm and 8pm and Power Hour is
every Wednesday between 9pm and 10pm - basically you can drink
as much as you want for just €6.
Be aware of the mirrors on the way to the toilet; you'll either
walk into one of them or spend 10 minutes excusing yourself as you
attempt to navigate around your own reflection.
The Drunken Ship is open until 2am daily.
